WrestleMania X8: I Was There

maniax8

The Rock vs Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8 is generally viewed by most fans as one of the best ‘Mania matched ever – and I was lucky enough to be there to see it live and in person!

WrestleMania had only come to Canada once before, with WrestleMania VI, way back in 1990. Back then, I was only 8 years old, and living about 14 hours away. But when it was announced that WrestleMania was going to return to Toronto in 2002, I was now 20 and living just under an hour away going to school! Needless to say, you would have had to rip my arm off at the shoulder to keep me from going!

I remember watching the incredible build for Hogan vs Rock in the weeks leading up to ‘Mania. My wrestling fan friends from school who were going with me and I could hardly wait for the big weekend. And when it finally came – we made it count! I also had 2 childhood friends who came from home to go to ‘Mania with us, which made it extra memorable for me. When they arrived in town, they made it to my apartment just long enough to drop off their luggage – then it was straight to the local sports bar for supper and pitchers of beer, followed by a night at the local strip club…..c’mon, we had to make it a memorable weekend, right?? lol

Anyways, the next morning it was up early, and off for Toronto! We took it pretty easy that day, taking in a few sights. Unfortunately, we didn’t have tickets for AXXESS or any of the other wrestling fun. The thing that really stands out in my mind from being in Toronto that weekend is that literally everywhere you went in that city, you heard the trademark Ric Flair “Woooooo!”. You would even hear entire blocks of fans competing to make the biggest group “Wooooo!”. It was quite a thing to witness in person. We also ended up running into Al Snow, and the cast of Tough Enough 2 at Planet Hollywood Toronto at the base of the CN Tower though, which was pretty cool.

That night, we sat in a hotel room making signs for the following nights show.

The next day – WrestleMania Sunday – we spent most of the day just hanging around the Skydome, taking in all the sights and talking to fellow wrestling fans from all over the world, which I particularly enjoyed. Then…..it was time for the big show itself! We all filed inside, and spent some time looking at the merchandise stand before heading to our seats. We ended up with really good seats, seated just to the left of the ramp just below the stage.

Now this is where this blog is gonna take a bit of a turn. I honestly haven’t watched this on DVD in years because it will never be able to live up to what I have in my memory, so I don’t remember every detail of every match. I will share with you what I do remember of my own personal thoughts, though.

The first match we saw was Rikishi, Scotty 2 Hotty and Albert vs Mr. Perfect, Lance Storm and Test for Heat. I remember marking out big-time getting to see Mr. Perfect in person.

Then they told us it was time for the main show. The lights went down, the intro video played, and the pyro exploded. What a feeling!

RVD vs William Regal was pretty good. I remember Van Dam taking a pretty sick looking suplex from Regal.

DDP vs Christian was fun, as I was a big fan of both men at the time.

I remember being strangely excited for the Hardcore match between Goldust and Maven. I guess because hardcore matches at ‘Mania were usually pretty good, because I was really excited to see Goldust back at the time…..and because I liked Maven’s music and wanted to hear it on the big sound system. The match did turn out to be pretty entertaining, though.

Kurt Angle vs Kane was good, but nothing really memorable about it stands out in my mind.

Undertaker vs Ric Flair, on the other hand, was one of the best matches on the card. I’ll always remember ‘Taker holding up the 10 fingers on the ring apron after he had beaten Flair bloody, signifying that he was now 10-0 and Wrestlemania. Such a memorable and iconic image in my mind.

I honestly don’t remember anything about Booker T vs Edge, because the stupid shampoo ad storyline leading into it had honestly annoyed me so much, that I decided to go get something to eat during that match.

It was quite a thrill to actually get to see “Stone Cold” Steve Austin in person, but other than the 3 stunners and the post-match stuff, his match with Scott Hall was pretty forgettable.

I remember being particularly disappointed with the Tag Team Title match with Billy and Chuck vs The APA vs The Dudley Boyz vs The Hardy Boyz. Especially considering the Tag Title matches that had taken place at the previous 2 ‘Mania’s. It was nice to get to see Stacy Keibler in person, though!

Next was the one that everyone remembers – The Rock vs Hulk Hogan. The feeling in the crowd during that match was indescribable. I was one of the few who was solidly behind Rock, and I literally thought a group of Hogan fans seated near me were going to tear me apart! I’ve been to huge concerts with over 80,000+, and I have never ever felt the amount of raw electricity in a crowd before or since, like I felt that night in the Skydome.

The Woman’s Title match was utterly forgettable, other than the nice hometown pop Trish Stratus got from the crowd.

Finally, it was time for the main event – Chris Jericho vs Triple H. The crowd was really hot for Triple H’s entrance, rocking to a performance from Drowning Pool, and cheering for his recent return, but after that the crowd honestly started to loose steam. It’s been talked about numerous time in the subsequent years, that the crowd just didn’t have much left in them after the emotion roller coaster that was Rock vs Hogan.

After the main event came to an end, Triple H gave an emotion promo about his recent return, which was never shown on camera.

After the show was over, I remember one of my friends offered a fan who had gotten one of the collectable chairs that were made for people with floor tickets $200 for his chair, but was turned down flat. A testament on both sides to the devotion of wrestling fan.

The next day we left Toronto, and so ended our WrestleMania experience. An experience I for one, will never forget!

Since January 2007, I have had an incredible passion for professional wrestling. One night, at the suggestion of one of my best friends, I tuned into WWE Friday Night Smackdown. Ever since that night, I have had an insatiable appetite for any and all things pro wrestling.

Along with staying on top of the current mainstream WWE and TNA product, I have spent much time educating myself on pro wrestling history through Wikipedia articles, biographies, old YouTube videos, and DVDs. In addition, as a cohost of This Very Ring on PW 24/7 Radio, I have been graced with the opportunity to learn about the business through interviews with the likes of Jerry Lynn, Smith Hart, Shad Gaspard, Chris Masters, Bill DeMott, and many others.

On my show, I have also interviewed many independent wrestlers. JD Maverick, Martin Casaus, Sugar Dunkerton, Gregory Iron, and Sinn Bodhi are all among some of the more low-key stars that I have had the pleasure of talking to. I even work with some independent wrestlers on PW 24/7 and am lucky enough to call them my friends. Just like the big names of WWE and TNA, these wrestlers also each have their own unique stories to tell about the business I am so passionate about. They all have something to teach me.

Since the No Way Out of Texas: In Your House pay-per-view in 1998, a February PPV between the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania has been an annual tradition. As of 2010, the final stop on the Road to WrestleMania has been the Elimination Chamber.

For the last three years, the final PPV before WrestleMania has featured two main event Elimination Chamber matches in which six wrestlers would either challenge for WrestleMania contendership of their brand’s world championship or for the championship itself.

Many have criticized the Elimination Chamber concept and its placement as a PPV. Others argue that the stipulations of these main event Elimination Chamber matches dilute the prestige of winning the Royal Rumble.

The Royal Rumble has come and gone and the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view is only two short weeks away. Surely enough, WrestleMania season is in full swing. WWE fans around the world are look ahead to the biggest professional wrestling show of the year.

WrestleMania 28 is being headlined by The Rock vs. John Cena and The Undertaker will look to extend his remarkable WrestleMania streak to 20-0.

The Rock vs. John Cena is definitely one of the biggest matches to grace WrestleMania since Rock face Hulk Hogan. For that reason, there’s no reason why the WWE should not make that match the center of focus for the show. After all, that match up alone is probably enough to sell out the show.

2012 WWE Royal Rumble: Mike and Sam’s Preview and Predictions

Kane vs. John Cena

Sam: Well, let’s kick off this preview with a non-title, not-rumble match for the evening. John Cena vs Kane. Kane has been on a wonderful streak lately, being rebranded back to his masked monster self. The core of his hatred being John Cena. I love the way his promos and overall aura have carried lately, mixed with Cena’s great ability of ring psychology and feeling the moments, having produced a solid build up. It’s no secret with us, or many fans, that we are huge fans of Cena in grudge matches compared to title matches as well. A match like this he gets to use his greater skills of playing to the crowd’s emotions over his wrestling. Also with Kane being back to his monster self as opposed to the almost joke of a teddy bear, they’ve removed the Super Cena stigma of a guaranteed win.

Mike: And how often is it that you see a non-title grudge match on the undercard of the Royal Rumble? This match should certainly be an interesting one. Like you said, we’ve always agreed that Cena’s grudge matches are some of his best. And returning under the mask has definitely done wonders for Kane’s character. His entire demeanor is especially revitalizing because, like you said, it removes the “Super Cena” stigma. Because Kane has been telling Cena to “embrace the hate,” I’m among those that think Cena will go crazy on Kane in this match. After all, he’s got every reason to do so. Go back and replay that awkward face that he made on Raw after Zack Ryder was taken out in the ambulance.

Sam: I’m such a Batman fan, I keep going back to the Dark Knight and The Joker telling Batman to defeat him you have to become crazy and break your own rules. Batman wouldn’t, but would Cena? With the Embrace the Hate vs the Rise Above Hate, there’s a greater subtext to the match if Cena can control himself. I think he doesn’t and goes wild on Kane because that would actually continue the story in a greater fashion. My actual only worry about this match is a Zack Ryder or Eve appearance wrecking it.

Mike: That’s a great comparison. If Cena does, indeed, go off on Kane, I expect it to do it in a way that would cost him the match. The story would move forward by having Cena stray further from his “Rise Above Hate” business and they’d keep the door open to having the feud continue. And I can see why there would be a possibility of Ryder and Eve making an appearance, but the way that Ryder was written off on Monday leads me to believe that they’re going to keep Ryder off the show so he can sell his injuries.

Sam: Me too. I think it’ll be a solid sell for Ryder. So for the match then. I think Cena succumbs to the “hate”, goes off the deep end, and wins the match. That way the feud can continue while Kane continues to nag at him for his actions and Cena has to struggle with what he’s done. I’m calling for a Cena win, but by no stretch super Cena.

Mike: Fair enough. So we agree on the fact that Cena will give in to Kane telling him to enbrace the hate. I stand by my prediction that Cena will go wild and lose by DQ.

Sam: You know, that’s true. It’s a straight match. Ah well… I’ll stick with Cena.

Mike’s pick: Kane wins by DQ

Sam’s pick: John Cena wins

Daniel Bryan (c) vs. Mark Henry vs. Big Show in a Steel Cage match for the World Heavyweight Championship

Mike: Next up is Daniel Bryan defending his World Heavyweight Championship in a Steel Cage match against Mark Henry and Big Show. This match has the potential to be a very interesting one. As far as I can tell, Bryan and Big Show have been having some pretty good chemistry with each other. In addition, the match had some pretty great build up on this past episode of Smackdown, so I’m pretty excited for it.

Sam: I agree. I’m still not the biggest fan of Bryan (or really a fan at all) but this has been a great little go with two guys I don’t care about commanding my attention and making me want to watch. That in itself is a great compliment. Add in Mark Henry who I have absolutely loved since the Hall of Pain transformation and this could be really fun inside a cage. The last time Henry and Show were in a cage together, Henry threw Show through the cage. Add in the wily Bryan and anything is possible for an outcome.

Mike: Now with the reports of Henry hurting his knee, how big a role do you think he will play in this match?

Sam: I’d like to think something significant, but you never know with these reports. Considering he’s been very much the third man of this feud and truly just an addition to the match of Show vs Bryan, I don’t expect much more than him being enough of a distraction to let the eventual winner capitalize.

Mike: Very true. There have been a handful of times where it seemed like Henry was just thrown in there. That said, I can definitely see him being a wild card when it comes to deciding the finish. Now personally, I think this match will see Daniel Bryan retain the championship. There really isn’t any reason for him to lose it right now. And hey, maybe Henry isn’t the only wild card when it comes to the finish. Perhaps we’ll see AJ help out Bryan in retaining his title.

Sam: I agree, I don’t see any point in passing the title away from Bryan right now. Show is just a joke in my eyes and I actually got excited at the prospect of him retiring after this match. I don’t know if Bryan holds all the way until Mania, but that’s for the future to decide. This match itself isn’t built for Bryan to clean win with his finish. He’ll escape the ring somehow to retain while the giants are busy or incapacitated.

Mike’s pick: Daniel Bryan

Sam’s pick: Daniel Bryan
